Imagine the pleasant surprise on their faces when they discover that the tremendous wine they just sampled is your own creation. In order to get to that point, however, you must first go through the actual process of making these wines – and that can be a tough task unless you have some help. This is where home wine making kits come into play. By using one of these kits, you can get the knowledge and practice you need to be better prepared to make a great bottle of wine.
So what is the level to which you’re ready to take on this task?? Do you want to work through with few pieces of equipment?? Then you’re probably willing to go the simple route and purchase a bare-bones kit that has some essentials, but perhaps not every piece of equipment that one might be willing to put to use. Even so, the simpler kits do come with instruction guides at times so that you can walk through the process and get to understand just what goes into making these wines. There is also the option of going all-out and purchasing a more comprehensive home kit so that you can get the full process. Often included in these larger kits are items like corks, brushes, and the fermentors and such that also are available in the simpler kits.
If you want to make great and interesting wines in the comfort of your own home, then you’ll need to know some places you can go to get these supply kits. Start with a place known as grapestompers.com. This site will sell you high-quality kits for making wine, plus offer a tutorial to potential winemakers and a newsletter which provides helpful hints to fellow vintners. Another site you may be interested in is called Beer-Wine.com. This outfit has been in business since 1972, and provides you with necessary equipment, along with ingredients.
It is indeed possible to have a fun, enriching wine experience thanks to home wine making kits.

Beverage Basics: Understanding and Appreciating Wine, Beer, and Spirits $42 "Beverage Basics "presents a new approach to understanding wine and other alcoholic beverages. The book includes an introduction to alcoholic beverages, information on important issues such as purchasing beverages, healthy drinking, and alcohol and the law, and an introduction to wine including viticulture, viniculture, and the sensory evaluation of wine. The authors teach readers about wines by varietal as opposed to appellation, which is a much simpler entry point for beginners to the world of wine. In addition to all the major wine varietals (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, etc.), the book also covers hybrid and Native American varieties, sparkling wines, and dessert and fortified wines. Chapters on beer and distilled spirits include information on making, purchasing, and evaluating beer and spirits. The appendices include map-filled sections on The Old World and The New World of wine, as well as a thorough examination of the TTB requirements for alcoholic beverage labels, and a complete glossary of terms. Author Robert Small is Dean and Professor of The Collins School of Hospitality Management at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and is the Chairman of the Los Angeles County Fair Wine competition, the largest and most prestigious wine competition in the US. |

The Oxford Companion to Beer $40.91 For millennia, beer has been a favorite beverage in cultures across the globe. After water and tea, it is the most popular drink in the world, and it is at the center of a $450 billion industry. Beer is, as Ben Franklin was said to have observed, "proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." The first major reference work to investigate the history and vast scope of beer, The Oxford Companion to Beer features more than 1,100 A-Z entries written by 160 of the world’s most prominent beer experts. Attractively illustrated with over 140 images, the book covers everything from the agricultural makeup of various beers to the technical elements of the brewing process, local effects of brewing on regions around the world, and the social and political implications of sharing a beer. Entries not only define terms such as "dry hopping" and "cask conditioning" but give fascinating details about how these and other techniques affect a beer’s taste, texture, and popularity. Cultural entries shed light on such topics as pub games, food pairings and the development of beer styles. Readers will enjoy vivid accounts of how our drinking traditions have changed throughout history, and how these traditions vary in different parts of the world, from Japan to Mexico, New Zealand, and Brazil, among many other countries. The pioneers of beer-making are the subjects of biographical entries, and the legacies these pioneers have left behind, in the form of the world’s most popular beers and breweries, are recurrent themes throughout the book. Packed with information, this comprehensive resource also includes thorough appendices (covering beer festivals, beer magazines, and more), conversion tables, and an index. It is the perfect shelf-mate to Oxford’s renowned Companion to Wine and an absolutely indispensable volume for everyone who loves beer as well as all beverage professionals, including home brewers, restaurateurs, journalists, cooking school instructors, beer importers, distributors, and retailers, and a host of others. |
