As any beer lover knows you can drink beer out of almost any type of container. Beer is often drank straight from the bottle or can, from glasses, steins, mugs, and in Germany from boots.

German beer boots are containers made out of pressed glass or blown glass in the shape of a boot. The history of the German beer boot is based on two slightly different stories. In one story a group Germans were trying to capture a town in the early 1900’s and were having a bit of difficulty. The Prussian General thinking to motivate his men to win the battle, promised his soldiers that he would drink beer out of his boot if they were successful. The soldiers wanting to see the general drink beer from his worn and probably smelly boot captured the town in order to claim their prize. However, the general was a tricky general indeed and so he ordered a local glass maker to fashion him a glass boot from which he drank the beer thus keeping his promise to his men without ruining the taste of perfectly good beer.

The second story, is perhaps more believable. In this story the drinking of beer from a boot occurred on the front during the the first world war. A group of German soldiers on the eve of battle decided to have a beer or two to bring them luck however, they found themselves lacking glasses in which to drink their beer. Not to be thwarted by something as inconsequential as the lack of drinking contains they improvised and used a leather boot for the purpose. They handily won the battle the next day and decided it was due to their unusual drinking container. From then on they considered drinking beer from a boot to be lucky and a good omen and so the tradition was born.

Since that time soldiers have been toasting their victories both on and off the battlefield with a German beer boot. Beer boots are popular for toasting in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. They are also passed around as a challenge. Of course today’s German’s beer boots are made out of glass and not out of leather and have become quite collectable by some people in various countries.

Since the movie ‘Beerfest’ appeared in 2006, beer boots have become extremely popular in America and are seen more often on collage campuses at parties and are used for beer bong leagues.

German beer boots are available with different motifs and logos engraved on them and they are available in different sizes right from shot glass size to 2 liters, they are either made of pressed glass or are hand blown. Most of the larger sizes are all hand blown and some are true works of art.

There are many stores that cater to the demand for these boots and who can blame them. These unique drinking mugs have such a colorful history and heritage, and also delightful conversation pieces .

Owning a German beer boot is like owning a little piece of German history and heritage. They are also decorative and collectable pieces that look great added to any home bar or Beer Mug collection. They also can be used as conversation pieces for formal occasions, for fun as challenges, or simply for sipping a bit of that cold brew on a hot summer’s eve.
