Colorado Rockies Have Three Superstars by Lisa Hathorn
For the past 13 years, Todd Helton has been the face of the Colorado Rockies franchise. When his free agent years came, the Rockies signed Helton to a long term contract, making sure that he would be able to spend his entire career with the team. This past winter, Colorado signed all star short stop Troy Tulowizki and young superstar in the making Carlos Gonzalez to new contract extensions.
In 2011, pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez almost won 20 games, finishing 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA and 214 strike outs in 221.2 innings of work. At age 27, Jimenez is the ace of the staff and the teams opening day starter. He may be the next young player that the team considers offering a multi-year contract.
While Tulowitzki and Gonzalez lead the offensive fire power, they do have capable assistance in the batting order. Helton could still be productive, though his power is long gone. Helton last hit more than 20 home runs in 2004. Dexter Fowler provides range in center field which is important in spacious Coors Field. Fowler is also capable of stealing bases and scoring runs from the top of the lineup. Ryan Spillborghs and Seth Smith will platoon in right field. Both could possibly play full time for other teams.
While former short stop and second baseman Clint Barmes left to sign with the Houston Astros, the Rockies signed free agent infielder Ty Wigginton, formerly of the Baltimore Orioles. Wigginton is capable of playing third, short, and second base while providing some pop. Jose Lopez was brought over from the Seattle Mariners to play second base. Ian Stewart will play third and is capable of hitting 30 home runs.
Joining Jimenez in the starting rotation is lefty Jorge DeLaRosa who won 16 games in 2009 but struggled with injuries last season. Jason Hammell will likely be the third pitcher, with Jhoulys Chacin serving as the fourth starter. Veteran Aaron Cook is being challenged this year for the fifth spot by fire baller Felipe Paulino formerly of the Astros.
The next young player the Rockies might have to sign to a long term contract is pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. Last year Jimenez helped the Rockies contend for the National Leagues Western Division by winning 19 games while losing just 8. At age 27, Jimenez threw 221.2 innings finishing with a superlative 2.88 earned run average and 214 strikeouts.
Also in the bullpen for the Rockies are Matt Belisle, Franklin Morales, Rafael Betancourt, Matt Daley, Matt Reynolds, and Esmil Rogers. Handling the pitchers is catcher Chris Ianetta who is expected to provide power as well. With the departure of Miguel Olivo who signed as a free agent with the Seattle Mariners in the off season, Ianetta is expected to take over primary catching duties with young Jose Morales serving as his back up.
With a solid starting rotation and a hard throwing bullpen, the Rockies pitching staff should be capable of winning games and holding late inning leads in 2011. With a good blend of speed and ample power, the team should also score plenty of runs, giving them a chance to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants this season.

Coors And Jack $4.19 The story takes place in the early 1880's in the Arizona Territories with two old friends that grew up together since childhood. Jack and Coors get together a few times a year to take off on one of their wild adventures. This story is about one of their last adventures that took them to the southeastern part of Arizona where they get involved with the brotherhood of the Cowboys that wore red sashes around their waists. Thet take part in one of the most documented treasure stories of the southwest: 'The Skeleton Canyon Massacre', located in the southeastern part of Cochise County. With events that take place, they get the cache for themselves and hide it to be dug up later. 125 years later, Glen and Bill get together and make trips to various places around Arizona where actual western history took place. They decide to check out the area where the 'Skeleton Canyon Massacre took place. They meet an old coot by the name of Zwing Hunt who is a relative of one of the men that actually took part in the Massacre. They befriend each other and share information on the Massacre and the various scenarios of where the treasure may be stashed. The Strange events that take place later with Glen and Bill, lead them to the cache. They travel on to Tombstone with the cache and there, still experience events that make them wonder what the hell is going on. The night before they leaveTombstone to return to Prescott, they have the same dream which answers all of their questions regarding the strange events. Back in Prescott they take count of their cache and discuss how they're going to dispose of it. Bill, with a smile says, "When do we start." |
